“I set myself the challenge of taking on SGRAIL last year. I was happy with my ability to bike and run, but I didn’t feel confident in my swimming at the time. I was dragging myself up and down the pool and couldn’t swim more than a few hundred metres in a session without becoming completely exhausted. I didn’t feel like I was getting any better in the water, and I was worried about being able to swim the distance on race day.

Emma came to the pool with me and had a look at my technique. We went right back to basics and over a number of short 20 minute technique focused sessions my swimming, and my confidence in my swimming, came on leaps and bounds.

We focused on my body position initially, and then on incorporating breathing into the natural rhythm of my stroke. Then we looked at a few ways of reducing drag and making the most out of the distance per stroke.

Some of the drills were challenging at first but within a few sessions I could feel the difference in my swimming. I finally started to feel I was getting more out of the time I was in the pool training and definitely found the sport more enjoyable as a whole when I started to find some flow. Most importantly I was really happy with my swim at SGRAIL a few weeks later.”
